How does an Android emulator work?
Suppose you are running a Windows PC. All applications for Windows computers have either .exe or .msi extensions. And, Android applications have .apk extension.

Same thing will happen if you try to install a file with .exe/.msi extension on your Android device. The system will simply won't recognize the file type.

The emulator will use the hardware and power of the host machine (Our computer) and create a virtual Android ecosystem.

But everything is happening on your computer. It's like creating a home inside your home.
And your activity will be saved on the hardware of the computer. So after installing any applications, if you close the emulator, the progress will be saved on your hard disk, just like in Android phones, they will be saved in the device storage.

When you are looking for the best android emulators, I know you must have a purpose. You simply want to do something specific. And that specific need is the halfway of the selection process.
Suppose if you are looking for an emulator to play Android games on PC, you will have 2-3 popular choices in front of you.
On the other hand, if you are a developer who wants to test his/her apps on a virtual Android device, it will simply narrow down the list for you. Because, only a few emulators allow you to manually instal apks from the hard disk of the computer.

Apps have a minimum Android version requirement. So, if you are using a really outdated Android version, you won't be able to run various apps.
So you should try stable and comparatively new versions of Android. In my review, I will be mentioning all three steps I have mentioned above.

You can install any app and game from Google Play Store. It supports most of the apps from Play Dtore.
It has Android version 7.0. If you want to play PuBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile or any other popular mobile game as well as use some popular android apps, nothing will come closer to bluestacks.
It's the most stable android emulator with many productivity features.
One useful feature of Bluestacks is you can install APK files from your hard disk. It's not available in all emulators. There are some apps which is not available in Play Store, instead they are in APK format. This feature allows you to install third party apps on Bluestacks.
If you are a productivity njnja who has to keep open multiple apps at the same time, Bluestacks offers a Multi-instance feature for them.
Multi-instance allows users to create multiple windows at the same time. So, it's possible to use multiple apps at the same time, or the same app with different accounts in different windows.

Noxplayer
Noxplayer is a lightweight emulator which is one of my favorites android emulators. It comes with Android 5.0 , but you can simply install latest version of Android using multi-instance settings.
Nox supports 90% of all apps and games from Google Play Store, which includes all popular android games such as PUBG Mobile, Call of Duty Mobile or Garena Free Fire.
It has a minimal design without unnecessary bloatwares. Just after logging in to your Google account, you can use it like it's an Android device.
Noxplayer runs on low-end PCs without much issues. You can allocate CPU cores, RAM and resolution from the performance settings.
By default it has 3 presets, low, middle and high. However you can set your custom performance settings if you have a high-config PC.
If you are a gamer, then the screenshot and video recording feature will help you a lot. You can take a screenshot or capture the screen with a single click from the sidebar.
Instead of installing all apps from Google Play Store, if you already have an APK file on your computer, you can directly install the app from your hard disk.
And, gaming has a strong correlation with FPS. NoxPlayer allows you to show FPS all the time in a single click. You can enable it from the menu and it will always show you the FPS.
If you want a more lightweight solution than Bluestacks, my first recommendation will be Noxplayer. No useless apps, not RAM hungry and performs great.
LDPlayer
LDPlayer is my most favorite emulator for running Android applications on a computer. I personally like and recommend it because it's developed for all kinds of users.
If you have a old computer with 2 GB RAM and a dual core processor, you can use LDPlayer on your computer.
It does have some built-in apps, they are Settings, Play Store and File manager app. Unlike Bluestacks, there is no unnecessary apps which you will never use in your life.
LDPlayer lets you select the resolution of the emulator. By default, it has a resolution of a Tablet, however you can select Mobile or a custom resolution setup.
The most important feature of an Android emulator is allocating CPU cores and RAM so that it doesn't conflict with your OS and starts lagging.
You can provide some of your CPU cores and limit the RAM usage of the emulator.
If you are a gamer, you can run any game smoothly on LDPlayer. It comes with a built-in key mapping for games, but you can change the key settings any time you want.
Like Noxplayer, you can screen capture or screen record like it's an Android device, but more easily.
LDplayer has multi-instance support. Multi-instance is creating multiple windows and using same applications/different applications simultaneously. It's a great feature if you want to multitask.
Memu Play

Using Memuplaye is like having an Android smartphone inside your Windows machine. It gives you the feel of stock Android and some extra features which makes it ideal for gamers and productivity ninjas.
Memuplay itself is a very light emulator. It installs faster, launches faster and doesn't lag at all. By default, it has the resolution of a tablet, however you can set it to mobile or a custom resolution.
Depending on your machine, Memuplay will generate a configuration for the emulator, such as CPU cores and RAM will automatically be allocated. But if you feel that it's not ideal for your specs, you can change it whenever you want.
Memuplay also has a feature called shared storage. So emulator downloads and pictures will be saved on your computer. You can easily access them even if your emulator is off.
It may seem like a normal feature, as the emulator itself is inside the Windows OS. But unfortunately, if the feature is not available in an emulator, you can't access its files without launching the emulator because it encrypts the whole emulator system.
You can also install APK files from your hard disk directly. And, the most unique feature of this emulator is the Fake GPS enabler. You can provide a fake location to your emulator.
In my experience, Memuplay is a perfect emulator for running games. It's optimized for gaming and you can play games at 60 FPS. It lets you enable the FPS meter from the menu. However, you can either lock the FPS at 60 or you can enable the 120 FPS limit.
Overall, Memu emulator offers a really smooth user experience.
Phoenix OS
Phoenix OS is not like a traditional emulator. As you can guess from the name, it's a complete operating system which is powered by Android 7.1. Instead of running an OS within an OS, you run it directly.
You can install Phoenix OS on a small partition of your hard disk and boot to Phoenix OS instead of Windows. It's one of the best choice for you if you have a low/mid-end pc who loves Android games.
Because it will require less RAM than a traditional emulator in Windows. Think normally, suppose you want to use Noxplayer. You have to use it in Windows computer.
The Windows itself requires RAM. And, NoxPlayer also requires RAM. On the other hand, with Phoenix OS, Windows won't be running, so you will have more free RAM.
You can install any game and app on Phoenix OS. And if you are a gamer, you are going to love it for sure.
It offers stable 60 FPS with zero lag or frame drops. However, I will only recommend it to hardcore gamers. Because if you don't use it on a regular basis, then installing a separate OS is not a good idea at all.
Bliss
Bliss OS is also a dedicated Android OS which is very lightweight and portable. You can boot Bliss OS in a USB drive and test the OS live from the USB drive without installing.
So if you are confused about the OS, you can check the features and user experience of Bliss OS. Once you are convinced to install Bliss OS on your computer, you can install it in a small part of your hard disk.
Bliss OS have both stable and beta versions. To get better performance, you should always go for the stable version.
To be frank, Bliss OS is the most complete Android OS which lets you run any Android game and apps smoothly without any lagging issues.
If you want to play heavy games like PUBG Mobile or Free Fire on a low-end PC, it's better to have a separate OS.
Because, if you run Bliss OS, you won't have to run inside Windows. Which will save a lot of processing power and RAM.
Bliss OS feels like an Android tab, just on the big screen. You can get an average 60 FPS from battle royale games in a mid-end PC.

I was writing about some emulators back in 2017-2018. And it was one of my favorite emulators which has all features like any other emulators of my list. But, recently their website is not available.
However even if you download Koplayer from third-party sites, it acts like a malware. You won't be able to uninstall the app, no matter how you try.
I tried every option while uninstalling, but it doesn't seem to go away from your computer. I also couldn't delete the files from my computer.
Remix OS
Remix OS was also like Bliss OS/ Phoenix OS, which could be installed as a separate OS. But the development of the emulator was discontinued and it hasn't been updated for years.
You can download it from third party support. But there is no official support or progress. So I didn't add it to my list.
AmiduOS

AmiduOS was also a very renowned emulator of its time. It was optimized for gaming. All high-end games ran smoothly on Amiduos. It also offered file sharing between emulator and windows os.
But the developers decided not to continue it. So, it's not updated any more.
